The Art of American Cheese

It's officially American Cheese Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the craftsmanship behind American-made cheeses. Since 1941, the cheesemakers at Maytag Dairy Farms have proudly crafted Maytag Blue Cheese in the heart of Iowa. We continue the legacy of offering artisan American cheese today, just as we have for 85 years. 

 

 

While blue cheese has deep roots in Europe with ties to France, Italy, and England, Maytag Blue Cheese is an all-around American blue. Brothers Frederick and Robert Maytag set out to create the first uniquely American blue using cow's milk rather than sheep's milk. With help from Iowa State University, a new approach to blue cheese production was developed, and the now world-renowned Maytag Blue was created. 

 

The art of crafting Maytag Blue Cheese carries on today in Newton, Iowa, made using traditional methods that result in a creamy Blue with bold, distinctly Maytag flavor. Today, Maytag Blue Cheese can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, including classic Wheels and Wedges, Farm Reserve, Crumbles, and Spread, making it easy to savor the unmistakable taste of Maytag Blue.
