Foundry Distilling Co. and Maytag Dairy Farms Launch MAYTAG MEAD HONEY WINE

Published On: August 30 2021

West Des Moines, IA (August 23, 2021) –   In celebration of their 80th anniversary, Maytag Dairy Farms collaborated with Foundry Distilling Co. in Historic Valley Junction, Iowa, to create Maytag Mead Honey Wine, a barrel-aged mead made with honey from the farms' honey bees. The release date of Maytag Mead is set for mid-September 2021.

“Agriculture has always been a Midwest mainstay, leading to notable culinary creations. For 80 years in Newton, Iowa, Maytag Dairy Farms has produced its renowned, award-winning blue cheese. According to Don Boelens, CEO Maytag Dairy Farms.   "We wanted to produce another high-quality, sustainable product from our farm using honey made by our bees. We were lucky enough to have one of the most innovative distilleries in the world right here in our backyard and are pleased to be working with Foundry Distilling Company,” Boelens added.

Maytag transported the farms' sustainably produced honey to Foundry Distilling Co., where they began the fermentation process by heating the honey in Foundry's custom-built four-tray pot still at 75℉ for twenty days, creating a product that's 12% alcohol by volume (ABV). Foundry then aged the mead in used charred oak bourbon barrels. After finishing, the mead was bottled and meticulously sealed using wax produced by Maytag estate bees.

“Introducing this delicate honey wine to a used whiskey barrel adds beautiful hints of vanilla and caramel,” explained Greg Biagi, Distiller at Foundry Distilling Co. “It has wonderful character and drinks well on its own or pairs perfectly with their blue cheese.”

"Maytag is one of most recognized brands in Iowa–if not the country–when it comes to high-end, high-quality cheese,” said Scott Bush, owner of Foundry Distilling Co. “We are excited to be working together and think we have collaborated to create a very unique world-class mead.”

Maytag Mead will be introduced at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado, being held from September 10-12.  The product will retail for $39.99 (750 ml bottle) and will be available in limited quantities at MaytagDairyFarms.com and FoundryDistillingCompany.com.
